Comcast upgraded internet speeds for more than 20 million Xfinity customers at no additional cost, the company announced Tuesday.
The upgrade increases upload speeds by 50% to 100% for Xfinity Internet and NOW prepaid service tiers, with most plans also seeing faster download speeds. The changes aim to improve performance for customers working remotely or uploading content to social media.
The speed increase comes as 94% of devices now connect to the internet via Wi-Fi, according to Comcast. The company emphasizes that its Wi-Fi gateways and extenders provide coverage throughout customers’ homes, while subscribers can also access Comcast’s network of Wi-Fi hotspots when away from home.
“This combination of products delivers a faster internet and mobile experience and hundreds of dollars of savings to customers,” said Emily Waldorf, senior vice president of consumer products at Comcast Connectivity and Platforms.
New and existing customers who subscribe to plans of 400 Mbps or faster can now receive one line of Unlimited on Xfinity Mobile free for a year. The company’s Wi-Fi PowerBoost feature provides mobile customers with Wi-Fi speeds up to 1 Gbps regardless of their internet tier.
Comcast attributes the speed improvements to its fiber-based network infrastructure, which has received over $80 billion in investments during the past decade. The network now reaches more than 64 million homes and businesses and includes approximately 23 million Wi-Fi hotspots.
Customers interested in the unlimited mobile line offer can sign up through their account on Xfinity.com, the Xfinity app or by calling 1-800-XFINITY.
