has had a rich work history throughout her 91 years of life, having worked with the federal government, nonprofit organizations and side gigs such as selling real estate.

While it is safe to say Abbott鈥 who lives in the Bellevue neighborhood in Southwest鈥 lives comfortably, she was delighted when notified about a bump in her monthly payment due to becoming a law earlier this year.

鈥淚 received an increase in my Social Security based on the elimination of the Windfall Elimination bill that has been considered by the Congress for the last 11-12 years,鈥 said Abbott. 鈥淚 worked [primarily] as a federal employee during my working years and earned Social Security with part-time jobs. I started paying into Social Security when employed with the Alliance of Labor Action, a Teamsters-oriented organization led by Wiley Branton, and I worked with them for six years.鈥

Abbott explained that she did not participate in Social Security鈥攁nd did not pay Social Security taxes–while working for the federal government because the covered its employees. When Abbott applied for Social Security benefits, she was shocked to find out that her monthly allotment at the time was a little over $100 instead of the $600 that was expected because of the Windfall Elimination Provision.

Now, Abbott, mother of 最新麻豆影音视频 Publisher Denise Rolark Barnes, said she is happy that the Social Security Fairness legislation remedies her situation.

鈥淚 have gotten some increases over the years, mainly cost-of-living increases,鈥 she told The Informer. 鈥淏ecause of the bill, I will be reimbursed all those years for the money that I was due.鈥

Particulars of the Social Security Fairness Act

Abbott joins millions of Social Security recipients as a beneficiary of the Social Security Fairness Act. Essentially, the law repeals the and the .

The policies were instituted to prevent workers from getting an edge over other workers by having access to both public pensions and Social Security retirement benefits. Primary beneficiaries of the law include teachers, police officers and firefighters in a number of states; federal employees, like Abbott, covered by the and people whose work is covered by a foreign social security system.

The bill was shepherded through the U.S. House of Representatives by Reps. (D-Va.) and (R-La.) in November 2024 and through the U.S. Senate by Sens. (D-Ohio) and (R-Maine) in December. Former President Joe Biden signed the bill on Jan. 5.

鈥淭he bill I鈥檓 signing today is about a simple proposition: Americans who have worked hard all their lives to earn an honest living should be able to retire with economic security and dignity,鈥 Biden said. 鈥淭he law that existed denied millions of Americans access to the full Social Security benefits they earned by thousands of dollars a year.鈥

American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) President Everett Kelley was at the ceremony where the then-president signed the law and said the experience moved him personally.

鈥淲hat do I think about when I witness the Social Security Fairness Act being signed by the president,鈥 questioned Kelley, according to a Jan. 13 post. 鈥淚 think of my very first Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C. sponsored by AFGE, where we were lobbying Congress to repeal two provisions of the law 鈥 I think of the nearly 3 million public workers who will finally get the full Social Security benefits that they have worked all their life for. Thank you, President Biden.鈥

The Social Security Administration has paid over $7.5 billion in retroactive benefits to over 1.1 million people, as part of the law鈥檚 rollout, with an average payment of $6,710, and is prepared to begin paying higher monthly benefits starting in April, according to the agency鈥檚 website.

鈥淪ocial Security鈥檚 aggressive schedule to start issuing retroactive payments in February and increase monthly benefit payments beginning in April supports President Trump鈥檚 priority to implement the Social Security Fairness Act as quickly as possible,鈥 said Lee Dudek, acting commissioner of Social Security. 鈥淭he agency鈥檚 original estimate of taking a year or more now will only apply to complex cases that cannot be processed by automation. The American people deserve to get their due benefits as quickly as possible.鈥

Washingtonians, Social Security Advocates Celebrate Payments

After years of advocacy, the , of which Abbott is a member,  was pleased with the passage of the Social Security Fairness Act.

鈥淪ince their inception, NARFE has opposed the Windfall Elimination Provision and Government Pension Offset as unfair penalties that punish hard working public servants by reducing their Social Security benefits,鈥 said Bill Shackelford, NARFE president. 鈥淗istory was made when President Biden signed the Social Security Fairness Act into law. This milestone represents the culmination of years of tireless advocacy by NARFE and its members, who time and again made the case for fairness and equality in Social Security benefits.鈥

U.S. Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Maryland) voted for the law, saying it rewards dedicated public servants.

鈥淔rom firefighters to teachers to food safety inspectors, we count on the services that public employees provide every day,鈥 said Van Hollen, 66, on Jan. 6. 鈥淥ur passage of this bill is a critical step toward ensuring all public workers and their families can retire with dignity, receiving the full Social Security benefits that they have paid into 鈥 and earned 鈥 after years of hard work.鈥

Another champion of the Social Security Fairness Act is an advocacy group that seeks to expand the reach of Social Security to all Americans. Its president, said the law comes at a critical time in the country鈥檚 history, noting that each day, 12,000 baby boomers turn 65, the country鈥檚 defined retirement age.

鈥溩钚侣槎褂耙羰悠 75% of public employees, whether on the federal, state or local level are covered by Social Security presently,鈥 Altman, 75, said. 鈥淧eople must know that there are benefits to being a Social Security recipient. Your monthly payment is adjusted to inflation and there is disability insurance available to those who qualify. What we at Social Security Works want to do is to see that everyone has access to the system and extend everyone鈥檚 benefits.鈥

Altman pointed out that federal workers before 1984 did not have access to the Social Security system and state and local public employees had to opt into the system, not be automatically enrolled. She said the changes that the Social Security Fairness Act made have been advocated since the mid-1980s.

鈥淚t has had popular, bipartisan support for many years, but the Republicans would always bring up the issue of how to pay for it,鈥 Altman said.

Altman said the American people should thank the Democrats and Biden for advocating for the law. She said credit for its passage and implementation must be given to the Democrats and not to Trump.

鈥淚t is true that the law kicks in while Trump is president, but it was the Democrats in the Congress and the Biden administration, especially the Social Security Administration, that worked during December and the holidays to see that it would be implemented,鈥 Altman said. 鈥淭he Trump administration should not take credit for this.鈥

    1. Retroactive payments only go back to Jan 2024. Please check the specifics before publishing as facts.
Workers were promised retirement benefits only if they met the work and time requirements. They did meet the requirements but were cheated out of their full benefits when it was time to receive them.

  1. I’m trying to figure out if I qualify. I have been calling SS for months and not getting through to anyone. I worked and paid into SS while in high school and college and a few years after I graduated college. I have a state pension through OPERS. My husband worked for the railroad and because I am his wife, I get a portion of his retirement which is federal. I have been unable to find out if receiving a portion of the federal pension disqualifies me. When I go on the SS website, it tells me I have enough years to draw SS, and my backpay would be $17,000.00 from last year until March of this year, and my monthly check would be $1200/month, but that’s only if I qualify. Does anyone know?

  2. If you don’t pay into social security, then you shouldn’t get to collect social security !

  3. I am extremely pleased that former President Biden signed this bill. But let鈥檚 not forget that this was a bipartisan effort by both the Democrats and the Republicans working together to put it before the President to sign. I am also pleased that President Trump is expediting this much quicker than was originally scheduled.

As a retired policeman, I tried to get the city that I worked for to enable our department to contribute to Social Security to no avail. I look forward to all that are justly receiving this increase which we fought for so many years ago.

  4. I had to pay back 8,000 due to this ! When I first started ssd in 2017 , after having to pay back , this left me only having 288 a month for 3 years ! So why won鈥檛 they go back more the one year !
    Dead wrong !

  5. I have a question. If those years as a federal employee they didn’t pay into social security why should they get payments especially if they are getting pay from federal or private systems?

  6. So if that true about Joe Biden and the democrats my saying Thank you. The Question is what trump gonna do for the American people now.

  7. Thank you Democrats!! Not so fast- this retro money and the increased monthly amount and I think even a little more of our income is going to pay the additional Federal Income taxes we will owe- thanks to moving us from a 12% to a 22% bracket. Most recipients will see this since those federal pensions are high enough to warrant payment of Federal income tax. Y’all should look into all aspects of a program before implementing them. Just a way for the Dems to get more of our tax dollars for their wasteful programs.

  8. My husband worked for a univ. For 6 years but had to retire because of sickness. Then he received his soc sec and pension. Due to his death I now receive his pension and soc sec. So am I eligible for the fairness act

  9. Important to note that the Social Security Fairness Act only provides retroactive benefits starting from January 2024. If you haven鈥檛 applied for spousal or survivor benefits before because of the GPO, do so ASAP, because there is a limit to the months of retroactive benefits for new GPO removal applications.

  10. My Socal Security checks was stop in February, I didn’t get a Socal Security check since do I qualify for government off _set for my pension. I WORK 12 YEARS FOR VETERAN AFFAIRS DO GET MY FAIR SHARE OF MY SOCAL SECURITY PLEASE HELP ME. THANK YOU.

  11. I paid into Social Security all my working years I retired from NYPD with a pension am i eligible

  12. Disgusting. They didn’t pay into Social Security because they had their own retirement program. Now they are digging into mine. There is nothing fair about this at all. They are a bunch of freeloaders. Iwas compelled to contribute to Social Security. Now these government leaches are stealing it from me everywhere they can. First, they gave it away to illegal aliens. Now they are giving it to double-dipping government moochers.

  13. Ms. Abbot is not correct when stating that now because if the Fairness Act ( they should never have been implement f to begin with) I lost nearly a quarter of a million dollars due to this unfair law, & will never recover all money I lost due to this unfair act. They only reimburse individuals for 1 year, not all the years you were entitled to receiving the any one had earned. Ms. 最新麻豆影音视频 according to what she stated, is under the impression that she will receive all monies lost ( no matter how many # of yrs) one one large payment. I don’t believe this is accurate, according to what I’ve read. Please correct for the record. Why did Biden wait sooo long to implement this law. Should had been done years ago, rep. Since he’s been in office the last 50+ years!!

  14. Thus retro active should be for everyone who is getting socials security applicants should be for all recipients

  15. It looks like it will only help the federal employees, not us already on Social Security once again we get the short end of the stick with a 3% raise when inflation is 20%

  16. I am 93 and received my payment and was very pleased it will help me to get some of the basic. Needs

  17. Thank you Democrats & former President Biden plus my Tennessee Congressman for whatever roll Y’all played in finally voting for fairness to us “Senior Citizens” future. Y’all some “GOOD MEN, CHARLIE BROWN’S”. Healthy New You-2025, to the moon & back..
